Infrastructure markets in the first nine months of 2019 were driven by a new confidence in Asian dealmaking and a seismic shift in the energy markets. Inframation Group Managing Editor Tom Williams examines the implications for year-end and beyond

The third quarter is traditionally a sleepier time in most investors’ calendars. In the northern hemisphere – where the majority of dealmaking still takes place – brokers famously advise to “sell in May and go away” into the dog days of August. It is not until October and the final quarter that the real deals get done, or so conventional wisdom goes.

But the world is of course much bigger than the US and Europe. And looking at last week’s Inframation figures and reading the accompanying market comment from Inframation journalists, it could well be that in the third quarter of 2019 there were some profound shifts going on in the infrastructure finance markets.
