Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft now dominate renewable energy corporate PPAs and developers globally are following their lead with new projects. Will increased digital demand under the COVID-19 lockdown mark a new phase in their corporate offtake ambitions? David Craik reports

Tech companies, led by Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft, currently represent around a quarter of all the renewable energy sold to companies globally. With life-under-lockdown driving internet use and online data services to even further extremes, it is a trend that looks unlikely to fade anytime soon.

According to BloombergNEF’s 1H 2020 Corporate Energy Market Outlook, just under 20GW of clean energy contracts were signed by over 100 corporations in 23 different countries last year. Of these, technology companies were the dominant driver of demand.
