GMR Infra awarded India greenfield airport project

GMR Infrastructure today said it has been awarded the greenfield Bhogapuram airport project in Andhra Pradesh state in southern India for which it emerged the lowest bidder in February 2019.

The first phase of the airport, designed to handle six million passengers annually, will cost INR 23bn (USD 300m), the New Delhi-headquartered infrastructure conglomerate said.

Since 2019, the land area meant for the project has been cut to 2,200 acres from 2,703 acres, a spokesperson for Andhra Pradesh’s information and public relations department said last month. 

Andhra Pradesh held elections in May last year after which a new government was voted to power began a large-scale review of projects initiated by the previous regime, delaying the award of the airport project.
