Law firm K&L Gates has beefed up its energy and infrastructure teams in Australia this month.

The latest to join the law firm in Sydney is Matt Baumgurtel, the firm announced on Tuesday (22 January).

Baumgurtel started the month as a partner in the firm’s energy, infrastructure and resources team. He was previously the general counsel and company secretary at renewables developer FRV, where he worked from 2013 until December last year.

In a statement, K&L Gates said Baumgurtel has 15 years’ experience advising on energy and infrastructure deals, including M&A in Australia and the Asia Pacific. Prior to FRV, Baumgurtel had spent three years at Gilbert + Tobin, working on energy and resources and M&A deals.

On 15 January, the firm said it had hired Simon Ashworth as a partner in its Sydney office. He was previously at Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

Some of the deals Ashworth advised on include the PPPs of Sydney Light Rail, Grafton Prison in NSW, Wiri Prison in New Zealand, and Cross River Rail in Queensland.
