Three of the consortia interested in building Codelco’s USD 1bn desalination plant have presented bids for the project, according to three sources.

The bidding teams are:
– Marubeni/Techint
– Mitsui/Algonquin
– Engie/GDF Suez/Vinci

InfraRed, Macquarie, Sacyr and Acciona all showed interest in the project but did not submit bids.

The three bidding teams have presented offers to build the facility at the Radomiro Tomic mine in the Antofagasta region, according to the sources. The second source said that the sellers will make a decision on which team will win within the next three months.

Codelco is seeking developers to build, own, operate and transfer a desalination plant to provide treated seawater to the company’s mining operations for phase II of the Radomiro Tomic sulphides mine in the northern Antofagasta Region.

The desalination project will have a capacity of 630 liter per second (l/s), with a potential of 1,680 l/s, and includes a 160km water pipeline and corresponding pumping systems, as well as related electric infrastructure. The project’s ultrafiltration pre-treatment is located at Caleta Viuda, 14km south of Tocopilla near Antofagasta.

Codelco engaged Asset Chile as the financial advisor.
